What Eye See

In this project, I explore black and white photography as a distinctive form of fine art photography, drawing inspiration from London’s cityscape and the rhythm of everyday life.

At the heart of the work is a focus on the fundamental elements of black and white photography; composition, texture, light, shadow and line. By stripping away colour, the idea was to draw attention to this elements and reveal the quieter, more intimate qualities within the London urban landscape.

The images invites the viewer into my personal perspective of London not just how I see the city but how I experience and interpret it. This is reflected in the title, “What Eye See” rather than the more familiar phrase “What I See”. The title represents a way of seeing what is personal and slightly removed from the ordinary.

I believe black and white photography has the ability to strip away the familiar and reveal something more reflective and emotional. Through this project, I seek to find those moments within the streets of London and transform the everyday scenes into something more contemplative.

The project will be followed up with other black and white/fine art photography series.

Lumen Sh’dow

Lumen Sh’dow is a black and white fine art photography series and follow up to my initial project “What Eye See”, exploring the intimate relationship between light, shadow and the female form. Using a beautiful model positioned against or withing controlled light to create striking silhouettes and abstract representations of the human body.

Instead of documenting the woman as a conventional portrait subject, Lumen Sh’dow reduces the figure to its essential visual qualities; silhouette, contour, shape, facial structure and curves. The intentional placement of light allows parts of the body and face to emerge while allowing others to fade into the shadow. Doing this, the images move away from literal representation and lean towards abstraction Where the audience experience the female form through shape, tone and negative space.

The title Lumen Sh’dow combines “lumen”, a latin word meaning light with Sh’dow, a deliberate fusion of She and Shadow, reflecting the central concept of this project, the woman and her shadow are not separate elements, but they become not just visually fused but conceptually fused through light. The light revealing only the selected fragments of her presence as the shadow becomes an extension of her body.

This project is presented entirely in black and white, placing emphasis on contrast, texture, luminosity, darkness and the sculptural qualities of the human form. The absence of colors removes the visual distractions and allows the relationship between illumination and obscurity become the main language of the images.

As the follow up of my previous project “What Eye See”, Lumen Sh’dow further sheds more light on the act of seeing and how an image can communicate through what is revealed and what is concealed, making the audience look beyond the identity of the model and engage with the body as a form. An interplay pf light, shadow, line, curve and space.

Most importantly, Lumen Sh’dow is an exploration of woman becoming one with her shadow through light. The project is a study of presence and absence, visibility and concealment and also the delicate boundary between the human figure and abstraction
